Northern Beaches Stamp Expo 2008
At the Northern Beaches Stamp Expo 2008 held over the weekend of September 13-14 2008 at Brookvale NSW, the winning team was the Society of Polar Philatelist for the second year running. The One Frame competition, which has been held annually at this venue since 1997, comprised 9 teams of 4 members this year.
It was pleasing to see the entries of both Campbelltown District Philatelic Society and the Sutherland Shire Philatelic Society for the first time, all the other teams having entered in some previous year. The whole concept of the competition is to raise awareness amongst the clubs and societies in the competitive aspect of the hobby in a friendly and non-threatening environment.
The innovation this year was the use of bonus points on the basis of first time entry or on the basis of a new exhibit. The idea was that by adding points for both new entrants and new exhibits we were levelling the field compared to well-established exhibitors and clubs.
The combined total of the individual team members scores, together with the bonus points added to the team, resulted in a very close contest. The winning team scored a total of 339 points but the following team scores speak for themselves 330, 315, 309, 307, 302, 300 etc. Clearly the winners did not have it all their own way.
It was interesting also to note that on the basis of pure One Frame concepts there were only 9 entries out of the 36 that
could be considered as having met the criteria of being a suitable subject for a one frame entry. Nevertheless all entries were treated with equal respect.
The NBSE 2008 was a combined effort of the Manly Warringah Philatelic Society, the Manly Warringah Leagues Club Stamp Club and the Exhibition standing committee of the Philatelic Development Council. The jury was chosen from the available judges on the NSW register with one apprentice judge from Canberra by invitation.
During the two-day event 6 dealers including one from interstate provided the commercial content. Local individual societies were also represented with their circuit books for members of the public to pick through. A steady flow of spectators and hobbyists was seen to go through the free entry door into the premises.
Hourly lucky door prizes were provided by material kindly donated by Australia Post who also sponsored the major prizes and a leaflet in its September Stamp Bulletin which may have helped the good attendance. We thank Australia Post for their continued support.
Another innovation was to provide 10-minute talks on various philatelic topics by speakers well versed in their subject.
Whilst not overall well attended the idea has merit and will be used in future expos.
As is the usual practice all competitors were provided with a laminated certificate with the judges critique sheet on the reverse as a memento of their entry by the Saturday afternoon. The opportunity was provided for an “at the frame” critique by the judging team.
The public participates in the selection of the popular choice winner by completing their nomination form which doubles as a lucky door prize form at the same time and provides their personal details answering a one question survey.
